Writing and Media Relations: Understand the subject, explain it, place it

Telya writes background papers and press material on economic and public-policy subjects — from the groundwork that makes a subject intelligible, through comment pieces and reports, to placement in print, radio and television. We work in German and English, and, where a mandate calls for it, in French and Russian.

Understanding comes first

Many of our mandates begin not with a text but with a question. Who bears the cost of a piece of legislation, and who gains from it? Why does a market fail to work as it should? Which numbers actually carry an argument, and which merely decorate it? We work our way into such questions, test the data and the sources, and set down what we find in a background paper. Only then does the communication follow: position papers, comment pieces, articles, speeches, reports.

Writing is speaking and being silent in one.

The same principle applies to newsrooms. Journalists on the business and politics desks take up a subject only when they can see why it matters beyond the case at hand — what market mechanisms lie behind it, who is affected, what is at stake. Having worked in business newsrooms ourselves, we know how such decisions are made. We prepare material accordingly: with figures that hold up, a clear account of what they mean, and a hook that carries.

What we do for you

  • Background and analytical papers: We work through a subject and the economic and political forces at play — as the basis for your communication, or as a standalone document for boards and decision-makers.
  • Ghostwriting for the press: Comment pieces, opinion articles, interviews. We find the hook, substantiate the argument and deliver a text the target publication can print — from first idea to final copy.
  • Press releases and briefing material: We write the release, build the distribution list, send it and follow up. We also give journalists the figures, sources and quotes they need to report the story themselves.
  • Placement and press contacts: We identify the right publications and broadcasters, approach editors, arrange interviews and background briefings, and handle exclusives and embargoes.
  • Website copy: What sets a company apart is rarely sitting there ready to be quoted. We work it out and write the pages so that it is clear within the first few lines — for readers, and for the search engines and AI systems that build their answers out of such text.
  • Annual and sustainability reports: We take editorial charge, write the copy and coordinate with your specialists, the designers and the printer.
  • Speeches, presentations and newsletters: We structure the argument, sharpen the key messages and deliver the finished material — slides and speaking notes for the platform, edited copy for newsletters and social media. We will rehearse the presentation with you if you wish.
  • Editing: We rework existing manuscripts, brochures, magazines and reports, on language and on substance, until the argument holds.

For campaigns and media buying we work with partner agencies.

Frequently asked questions

  • Both halves in a single process: working out the substance of a subject, writing and editing the texts, and placing them with newsrooms. You can commission individual pieces or the whole path from research to publication.

  • A document that works through a subject in order: the situation, the evidence, the interests in play, the questions still open. It gives your organisation — or a wider circle of stakeholders — a shared set of facts, and it underpins everything communicated afterwards, from a position paper to a background briefing with journalists.

  • Matters that need explaining, at the meeting point of economics, politics and society: regulatory proposals, structural change in an industry, referendum campaigns, energy and financial questions. In short, wherever a message convinces only if the reasoning behind it holds.

  • German and English as a rule, and French or Russian where a mandate calls for it.

  • Yes. We edit manuscripts, reports and articles already written — from the language itself to the shape of the argument.

  • It starts with a conversation about your subject, your aims and your timetable. From that we put together a proposal setting out the work, the schedule, the effort involved and the cost. On continuing mandates we work to an agreed rhythm and review the results regularly.

  • That depends on scope and timing, which is why we quote after the first conversation, setting out the work, the effort and the cost. On longer mandates we bill monthly at an hourly rate agreed in advance.

  • Yes, and in practice it usually is. Social listening shows where a subject is being discussed, data analysis supplies the figures behind the argument, and the AI audit checks whether the message is reaching AI systems too.
